Riana A. Singgih
Riana A. Singgih is an inspiring, dynamic teacher who makes practicing Yoga fun, enriching and feeling fulfilling. She has an abundant love of life and people, and teaching Yoga is her way of inspiring others to live life to the maximum, just as learning an asana pushes one to go further our own preset boundaries.
Rianas life experience of having and raising five children made her respect the individuality of each person and the struggles that different people faces. She brings to her teaching her own experience of yoga and philosophy of life, blending it for the needs of todays society. Riana believes that a regular practice of Yoga improves the physical and mental body. Her deep understanding of the Yoga asanas enables her to develop the simplest and most practical method of using the yoga poses to access the deepest layers of the body and acts as a self healing therapy.
Born in a traditional family in engaging in commerce in Jakarta, Indonesia, she grew up deeply rooted in the eastern philosophies and culture. She was sent to school in Singapore because her parents wanted her to learn their mother language of mandarin. Later, she continued her studies in the United States, taking her Bachelor and Master of Science at the University of San Francisco, California, USA which exposed her to the western work ethics and discipline.
Since young, Riana had a passion for dance and movements. Her interest in Yoga was sparked after she tried a Yoga class at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco in 1987.
The memory of the lightness and joy she experienced after the Yoga classes in San Francisco prompted her to look for her Guru, B.K.S. Iyengar in Pune, India. Since then, she travels regularly to Pune, India to be close to her teacher B.K.S. Iyengar himself (until his demise in August 2014). Riana developed a close relationship with her Guru and was deeply affected by his simple ingenious solutions to yoga and life challenges. His boundless love and energy to help other through Yoga and most of all by the sense of humor of a child that he maintains.
Under Gurujis guidance, Riana became one of the most senior Iyengar teacher in Asia teaching workshops and classes and trained many teachers around the world. She accompanied B.K.S. Iyengar as one of his ten disciples during his last overseas trip to the last continent that Iyengar Yoga has not spread to, China.
As well as a contentious Teacher, Riana is the Founder and Chairperson of the Iyengar Yoga Indonesia Institute, she is also the Founder of Iyengar Yoga Centre Indonesia (IYCI) and Singapore (IYCS). She was the Chairperson of the Association of Iyengar Yoga Indonesia and she was the founder and Chairperson of the Iyengar Yoga Association of South East & East Asia (IYASEEA).
Those who know Riana will tell you of her compassionate nature and respect for life. It is this kindness that moved her to set up the Riana A. Singgih Foundation; a foundation which donates funds raised through Yoga Events to various charities.
